Feature | Rivita
As a musician myself, I am always excited to listen to an artist with the label of ‘experimental’ associated with them. I firmly believe that all ‘real’ artists should be experimental by nature and should strive to create something wholly original. Any artist attempting to do this immediately gets my respect and my attention.
With this said, I was excited to check out Rivita’s debut album Snow Angels, and I was NOT disappointed. Right from the jump, I was captivated – and not just by Rivita’s sibylline stare on the album’s cover. The intro track “Liquid” immediately drew me in and took me to another sphere of strings and sound that are truly out of this world!
In my opinion, “Liquid” really did an outstanding job of setting the stage for the rest of the album, and it was one of my favorite songs overall. When the next song, “Too Close” rolled around, the vibe sharply shifted, and a funky brush drum beat kicked in. As I listened, I couldn’t help but smile at the thought – and the challenge – that Snow Angels was going to an album that would keep me guessing and keep me on my toes.
And it certainly did! As the next few tracks progressed, I was taken on a big dipper chute-the-chute ride through the past, present, and future of music, and I loved it! Rivita beautifully blends styles, genres, and the dimensions of time, history, and culture itself in her art, and it is wonderful to hear. As an example, the song “Speed Limit” exemplified this with its oh-so-awesome and hypnotic ‘90s vibe. Rivita’s music really is a rainbow of color and a mosaic of fresh and fantastic flavors.
Each song is so originally and marvelously different from the last. Don’t expect to be dancing to the same beat throughout this album, because you most certainly won’t be. Every song has its own identity and own heart, and I could easily imagine a group of music lovers debating which of the songs is their favorite and why, and each of them having a valid point.
In any case, I’ll wrap this up in the form of a question, but I’ll also offer an answer afterward. How do you define the undefinable? How do you say in words what can only be experienced and felt? I will tell you how. Go and listen to Snow Angels now! You will be delighted musically and enriched emotionally if you do!
