ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | MalinMakesAMess | “Rap God”
I love Hip-Hop and I love remixes. I’ve often wondered why musicians and bands don’t release more remixes of their most popular songs. They would obviously receive tons of views and make a lot of money if they did. Maybe it’s a matter of keeping the integrity of the original song in check or something, I’m not sure. Thankfully, there are so many fantastic fan remixes out there that rival even that of the original itself.
And this is exactly what MalinMakesMusic does in her masterful homage to the song “Rap God” by Eminem. Right out the gate, you are hit with Malin’s creativity as she uses her own voice to mimic the track’s main riff. What follows afterward is by no means a direct duplication of the original but rather a melodic performance of the opening verses.
This effect of singing the opening not only showcases the potential of Malin’s voice, but also attaches an additional layer of ‘Epicness’ to any already epic song – I’d also be curious to know if Malin played the music herself, as it seemed to be played on a real piano. If so, she is a talented musician as well as an undoubtedly talented singer.
As the beat kicks in, Malin seamlessly transitions from singing to rapping, and this is where the magic really starts to happen. Malin’s flow is sublime. She doesn’t miss a single beat. By the end of the song, I was out of breath on her behalf! It’s a real skill to be able to articulate so rapidly, and Malin achieves this flawlessly.
If the man himself, Eminem, hears this cover – and I for one hope he does – he will no doubt be impressed by Malin’s legit accuracy and lethal intensity. Moreover, the air of femininity Malin brings to an overtly masculine song and her ability to blend both aspects together should also be commended. All in all, I really enjoyed this rendition of “Rap God”, and as far a cover song goes, it is right up there as one of the best in its authenticity and originality.
I couldn’t find many other songs by MalinMakesAMess online, so she must really be new in her music journey, but I look forward to hearing more and seeing what she can create moving forward. For now, at least, MalinMakesAMess’s version of Rap God has been added to my Hip-Hop playlist!
