Feature | My Wife
As a happily married man I knew immediately I would be able to relate to and appreciate this song. I’ve also noticed a trend starting to return to music in recent years. It seems to me that more and more artists are beginning to turn away from that fake, hollow, materialistic image of the so-called ‘high life’ and are starting to return to singing about the things that truly matter in life.
Director Dzi is a shining example of this. Even though it was my first time listening to the song – and I’ve listened to it several times since – I made sure to make an extra effort to listen to the lyrics. As I did, Dzi’s lyrics came alive and really spoke to me on a personal level. I think both married couples and single people searching for love and belonging can relate to.
Another aspect I always appreciate and look for more than ever these days is the incorporation of real instruments. Thankfully Director Dzi didn’t disappoint here. At the beginning and subtly throughout continuing the song, there are some really nice acoustic guitar notes that really embody the loving tone I feel Dzi was striving for with this track.
Moreover, as the song rounds out and begins to taper off, an awesome trumpet solo starts to take over. This is then beautifully combined with the female backing vocals that had been accompanying the song, which now takes center stage to end the track with loving feminine authority. I greatly appreciated this musical variety. It was very refreshing to hear compared to the repetitive digitally-programmed of today.
We need more music like this in the mainstream zeitgeist. My hope is that songs like My Wife are a sign of things to come. The more artists like Director Dzi choose to muse about real human themes using real human instruments the better off music will be for all who listen now and in the future.
In the meantime, if someone asks me for an uplifting song recommendation to groove or chill to this summer, I will tell them you can’t go wrong with My Wife by Director Dzi.
