Feature | Never Say Sorry
When I heard about Michellar’s unique journey as a musician, I was immediately intrigued. Taking such a long break from music and then coming back all these years later kind of feels like something out of a storybook where a monk leaves society and goes into the wild, only to return many years later enlightened, and in service to the world.
With this image in mind, I went in to listen to “Never Say Sorry” with the hope of finding a wellspring of nuisance, culture, and life lessons within the lyrics and composition of the song. Thankfully, after adding it to my weekly playlist and listening to it several times along with some of Michellar’s other songs, I can gladly say that I was ‘NOT’ disappointed.
The first thing that struck me was Michellar’s voice. It is unique in of itself and has an uncanny ring to it that kind of reminded me of Kate Bush for some reason. This unconventional and eclectic sound is also evident throughout the song’s melody. The quirkiness of the music and the offbeat delivery of the vocals definitely has an 80s inspired feel to it, in my opinion, and I, for one, loved it. I wish more modern-day music would incorporate this aesthetic of originality of expression and strangeness of delivery.
On top of all this, there is also an uplifting and inspiring air within the words of “Never Say Sorry” as well as the lead guitar that makes the track hit home on both a conscious and unconscious level. It’s hard to explain, but after listening to the song, I felt inspired on a deeper level than what I had understood on the surface. You will have to listen to it for yourself to see what I mean, but there is unquestionably something dreamy and haunting about it.
All in all, “Never Say Sorry” and Michellar as a whole are a welcome and much needed addition to the stagnant world of modern music. I love to listen to any original artist who has their own style and voice, and Michellar certainly brings an abundance of both. Go check it out for yourself, you won’t be sorry that you did. And even if you are, you won’t have to say sorry to Michellar …ever!
