ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | TOWSE | “stay on the road”

Towse’s latest single is the perfect kick off to summer. A whimsical blend of pop, folk, and a bit of country, Stay on the Road is an ode to love and the unexpected journey it takes us on. It comes as no surprise that Towse’s leading lady, Grace Fellows, wrote this sunny single in her California home and filmed the music video in the Bay Area. This song begs to be played in a car with a sunroof.

While Fellows’ vocals are clear and full, the strings are what stood out the most to me in this track. There is a grounding rhythm that is best paired with boots stomping on a dusty floor, keeping in time to whirling dancers. I appreciated how a cheeky fiddle doesn’t just accompany the words of the song but annunciates them,at times like a call and response. The combination gives me the feeling of a drive on a summer’s day that ends with a barn dance and a sky full of stars.

Unlike some summer anthems, Towse’s track carries depth in its lyrics. This is about a relationship that, although fun and spontaneous, won’t disappear when the season changes. It's about toughing out the hard parts and the delight that can be found in taking a risk with a partner and seeing it blossom. The repeating chorus line “I’ve got one hand on the wheel and one hand in your hair, I’ve been driving every day but I’m not going anywhere” is a lovely image that I feel encapsulates the message of the song; With the right person, you can be both free and grounded.
