ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ABIGAIL FIERCE | “14 Cigarettes”

Abigail Fierce is a woman of many talents. She puts her own spin on what it means to be a “triple threat” as an actress, singer/songwriter, and music producer. As if those weren’t enough skills, she also can play multiple instruments. In her latest single “14 Cigarettes”, she plays all the instruments on the track except the drums. This is no small feat as the song showcases several genres, beginning with a soft acoustic pop sound and swelling to a more driving rock beat by the bridge of the song. Abigail’s voice plays to both sounds well as she laments a painful breakup with soft reminiscence that sharpens to a more edgy, angsty sound at key points of the lyrics.

This track speaks to how messy breakups can be right from the start with the words “we didn’t die a natural death, you killed us with disrespect” and “I tell my friends you moved away but you still call me every day”. The description that follows of her ex driving away with her cassette tapes on the dashboard of the car reminds me of a 2000s music video scene and totally fits the vintage feel she seems to be going for. The idea of a break up song with vintage imagery is actually a brilliant one because isn’t vintage what a lot of past relationships become at the end of the day? A once treasured thing that has lost its sparkle, now just carefully tucked away somewhere to be looked at from time to time. In this case, it's clear this relationship wasn’t built to withstand the test of time as Abigail reflects that it “always had side effects”.

In spite of the pain this love has caused, the song doesn’t convey bitterness in the end. The lyrics speak plainly of reflection and display some of the wisdom that can be found when a relationship is in the rearview mirror.
