ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Ula | “So Kind”

Lately, I’ve been hearing so many fresh new artists, it’s crazy! Just when I had been starting to think that music these days was becoming more repetitive and lacking in any creative flavor, some new musician comes along and reminds me of how wrong I am for having ever thought that. Ula is the latest artist to blow down the doors of my admittedly pessimistic perception.

Before getting into my review of the song itself, I have to comment on the music video, which is pretty hilarious. I always appreciate an artist who doesn’t take themselves too seriously – music is supposed to be fun after all. In the case of So Kind’s music video, I never realized driving a lawnmower could be so glamorous lol. I live in the suburbs and practically every day someone is loudly mowing their lawn! But now, thanks to Ula, the next time my head is being wrecked by the noise, I’ll just imagine the driver tipsy with flowers in their hair and a glass of red wine in their hand!

Okay, now for my review. The thing that stuck with me the most after listening to the song was the catchiness of the lyrics. I’m normally the type of person who hums a tune rather than recites the words, but in this case, both were true and I found myself singing the words of So Kind to myself for the rest of the day.

This is a real testament to Ula’s uber-modern voice and scintillating stylings, backed up by a wicked beat and some thumping yet chill summer-vibe basslines. I really liked the off-beat originality of the drum loops and dynamic breaks. It might not be the best thing when it comes to dancing, but it definitely makes the song so much more unique, original, and distinct, and I think it’s also why the song stayed in my mind hours after listening to it.

In an age of music where everything is pretty much just a copy of something else and everyone sounds more or less the same, we need more innovative artists like Ula harping the chords of originality and blasting out bona fide beats to uplift the current generation, while also paying respect to the artists that came before. After listening to the fresh vibrancy of So Kind, my hope is that there will be a veritable musical renaissance in the coming years, with Ula playing a significant part in making it happen.
